SANDWICH
HIGH SCHOOL
Sand\M'cb High School and Sand\yich itself has
changed greatly in the thirteen years since a bois-
terous hut innocent hunch of kids, with crewcuts
and bohhy socks, wandered into the beginning of a
year labeled "Kindergarten." The ocean however,
has stayed the same through those years. Like so many
sailboats on this ocean, the individuals of the Class of
1981 will depart and separate from one another as each
pursues the adventure of his or her life. Although the
sailboats and their destinations may change with time,
the ocean remains constant, eternal. It forms the horizons
that the Class of 1981 reaches for as it leaves Sandwich
High and begins to make its impression on the world. It
is therefore fitting that the image of sailboats on the
ocean constitutes the theme of the 1981 edition of I.anc-
n. Sandwich, Massachu.setts
I
I’m sailing away
Set an open course for the
virgin sea
For I’ve got to be free
Free to face the life that’s
ahead of me . . .
We’ll search for tomorrow on
every shore
And I’ll try, oh Lord, I’ll try
to carry on.

We, the class of 1981, would like to
thank Mrs. Susan Ducette for unself-
ishly devoting her free time to our class,
for pulling us together when times were
rough, and for helping us to achieve our
goals as a class. Her outstanding advis-
ing and leadership are greatly appreciat-

We, the Class of 1981, would like to thank Mr.
Ed Zion for over 30 years of dedicated work at
Sandwich High. He has touched the lives of
many of us as teacher, coach and friend. The
Class especially thanks him for the time he gave
to coach girl’s varsity basketball and softball.
We offer our best wishes to Mr. Zion in his
retirement.

HOMECOMING

108
On Saturday, October 25, 1980, Sandwich High celebrated its
second annual Homecoming. Friday night there was a Pep Rally
and bonfire to cheer on the sports teams. Although the Varsity
girls Field Hockey and the Varsity boys Soccer games were
rained out, the parade went on as scheduled at 11:30 Saturday
morning. The 1980 Homecoming theme was ’The Spirit of
Sandwich” and the class of 1982 took first place in the float
competition with their portrayal of the Doll Museum.
Saturday night students attended the Homecoming semi -formal
dance in the high school cafeteria. Senior Sue Milroy was
crowned the 1980 Homecoming queen. Seniors Elise Martin and
Sara Colton, Juniors Joya Columbo and Tracey Harmon, and
Sophmores Maureen O’Daly and Debbie LeFave made up the
queen’s court.
Saturday’s rained out games were made up on the following
Monday, October 27. Both the boys team and the girls team
defeated their opponents. At half time, spectators watching the
soccer game were entertained by a spectacular performance by
the Blue Knights Marching Band.

cessful. Before entering the State Tournament, the team
record was 11-4-1. At the time the yearbook went to print,
the team was undefeated in tournament play as it entered
the third round of competition against Foxboro, having
defeated Old Rochester and Franklin.

The Varsity Ice Hockey team has had some tough com-
petition coming from other Cape teams as Harwich and
Nauset. Senior and captain, Todd Kelley, successfully
lead his team to a 4-1 win over unbeaten Nauset along
with help from seniors Joe Giampietro, Scott Glenn and
John Condon. Dan O’Neil, a sophmore, has seen a lot of
action in goal this year and has been a major factor in
some of the important wins the team has experienced.

team sported a 4-3 league record. This record was high-
lighted by a victory over Nauset on the Nauset hardwood
and an overtime victory over heavily favored Harwich.
The team was lead by seniors Mark Vaughan, Rick Du-
gan, Brian Thurston and Harold Weekes. The Sandwich
Basketball future does look bright with juniors Brian
Emmanuelson, Jim Jacobbie, Rob Condon, Jay Closson,
Jon Woodbury and Steve Carr, sophmore B.J. Morgan
and freshman Dan Merlin, all returning with varsity ex-

made the 1980-1981 swim season a prosper-

It was a rebuilding year for the 1980
Track Team as they finished the season
with a league record of 2 wins, 6 losses.
The team was young, with only four
seniors, and was able to use the season
to develop itself for the future. More

before. The team should continue to
grow in the coming years, and so
should its strength.
